Description

SIR NEVIL REID: IN RAVELLO BETWEEN WAGNER AND BANDITS

with Matilde Romito, Archaeologist

In the second half of the 19th century Villa Rufolo was lived in by the Scotsman Francis Nevile Reid who transformed the ruins of the Villa into one of the most exquisite botanical setting in Southern Italy.

Archaeological surveys carried out some years ago involved the emptying of a cistern which served as the palace’s garbage dump with the consequent discovery a great variety of materials. The study of these “waste” evidences led to the reconstruction of the everyday life of this character-patron who, with his several initiatives, created, in a way, the modern identity of Ravello.
